There was an interesting post on IMDB about Jason Marsden appearing on an earlier episode of SBS as Doug. Is doug supposed to be Rich where the producers just changed the name, or is doug a totally diffrent charecter than Richie Halke?

Yeah, I saw that on IMDb too, but I can not remember who Doug was....but I think it was a diffrent character...because I don't think they changed the name only for one episode...

I'm pretty sure that Doug is Rich in the sense that he was good friends with JT. I remember the episode and Doug does act similar to Rich...
Honestly, I think Marsden was just hired as a one time guest star as JT's friend and then they kept him in mind when they created the character of Rich.

I just looked at ebay and they have Jason Marsden Step by Step clippings. They are $3.99 when you are on the homepage of ebay just type in Jason Marsden and it brings up two movie posters and at the bottom it says step by step clippings.

I love the character Rich Halke. He is so funny and can also be smart sometimes in his own way! I wish they came out with new Step by Step episodes.
